TITLE: HOME BUILDING – 75 YEARS AGO: Russ Keller has graciously permitted the Rim of the World Historical Society to republish this column that Russ originally published on January 27th of 2005.:

This image is from an old postcard, circa 1930, entitled “Valley of the Moon San Bernardino Mts. Cal.” Valley of the Moon is located approximately one mile east of Lake Gregory. In 1924 Arthur Gregory (yes, the one that the lake is named after) and A.G. Hamilton (of Fontana) subdivided the area and named it Valley of the Moon. This land had been the site of earlier logging for packing boxes for Arthur Gregory’s packing house in Redlands. To enhance the subdivision, they built a dam on Dart Canyon Creek and created the small lake – Moonlake. And, in 1925 the Arrowhead Valley Club Lodge was dedicated. This location was also some of the property the Franklins purchased in 1938, renovating the lodge, and dedicating it in 1939 as the Club San Moritz. The lodge burned down in 1950. Moonlake survived until the early 1960s. Perhaps pictured here is one of the early homes built in the subdivision. The image is interesting in that nine people are engaged in the construction, and three of them are women. The sign in the foreground states “C. Jacobson Co. Lumber, sash, doors, hardware and paint, Huntington Park. Go figure!
