TITLE: MORE STARS THAN THERE ARE IN HEAVEN – PART THREE: The Rim of the World Historical Society’s Celebrity and History Cruise on the Arrowhead Queen is one of the most popular events we host every season. The excursion covers some 14 miles of shoreline and our narrators provide information about celebrities (past and present) who live, or have lived, in the Lake Arrowhead area. During the tour it is pointed out where certain movies were filmed, along with some fascinating history such as the origin and purpose of the outlet tower; Papoose Lake; and the water tunnels that were featured on Huell Howser’s California’s Gold. But the main draw of the Cruise is seeing all those fabulous ‘homes of the stars.’ The tour includes well-known movie actors from the Golden Age such as John Wayne, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Myrna Loy, Dorothy Lamour, Doris Day and James Cagney. Television stars include the likes of Tom Selleck, Heather Locklear, Gary Burghoff, Telly Savalas and June Lockhart. Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, Pam Dawber, Peter Falk and Debbie Reynolds represent some of the actors from more recent decades. There are numerous homes featured that have belonged to music notables such as Sammy Hagar, Barry Manilow, Axl Rose, Brian Wilson, and of course, Liberace. Producers include Mervyn Leroy, David O. Selznick, Aaron Spelling, and Louis B. Mayer, who coined the phrase that has been the title of this series. Check our website for upcoming details about this and other events we look forward to hosting this season. Not all movie star homes have been in Lake Arrowhead. This week’s image is a photo featured in Russ Keller’s book Mountain Mileposts – Crestline Edition of the ‘Shirley Temple House.’ He quotes an article called Historic Hunting Lodge – Hollywood History which states, “The hunting lodge was built on 17 lush acres in 1931 by movie producer/director Delmer Daves.” The article goes on to explain that while Shirley Temple never owned the lodge, she was a frequent visitor, along with stars such as Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart.
